Why AI Brand Photos Can’t Replace a “Real” Brand Shoot

Let’s get this out of the way first: I love a bit of tech. I use ChatGPT all the time. I edit faster than ever thanks to clever software that uses AI. I’m definitely not here to bash AI.
But…
There’s a difference between using AI as a tool to enhance your work… and using it to replace the real thing entirely.
And when it comes to AI brand photos? The temptation is real. I totally get it. A few clicks, and boom you’ve got glossy “images” of yourself in a beautiful office, wearing fancy clothes, posing in ways that you’ve only seen in Vogue.
The problem? It’s not real and we can tell.
I mean, how many times recently have you seen those AI videos on Facebook or instagram? You start watching them and something just feels a bit off. They look beautiful but there’s some element that just doesn’t sit right.
Here’s why AI brand photos just don’t cut it when you actually want to build a brand that connects.
1. There’s no you in them
Sure, the face might look vaguely like you (or even very very like you…) . But your laugh? Your quirks? The way you actually hold yourself? It’s not there.
A real brand shoot captures the stuff you can’t fake – your energy, your mannerisms, the way your eyes light up when you talk about what you do. AI can generate an image. But it can’t create presence and it definitely can’t create that connection that comes between you and the photographer when it’s going great (and then shows in the photos).
2. They don’t build trust
We’re living in a world where authenticity matters more than ever. People don’t just want to know what you sell – they want to know who they’re buying from.
If your visuals feel too perfect, too plastic, or too generic, it sets off alarm bells. Real photos show your actual workspace, your real face (yes, even with the slightly wonky smile), and they say: “This is me. You can trust me.”
It could make people think… what are they hiding?
3. They can’t adapt to your brand story
An AI image won’t ask about your dream clients, your big launch, or your nervousness about being seen. It won’t suggest a prop that nods to your heritage or get excited about the colours in your new packaging.
A real brand shoot is tailored. It evolves with your business. And it’s built around you – not a generic template.
4. You won’t actually use them
Let’s be honest. You might feel a bit clever downloading your AI headshots… but will you really put them on your About page or pitch them to press? Probably not.
Because deep down, you know they’re not quite right. It’s more likely that you’ll share them and then immediately tell everyone that they’re AI – like when I get something from Vinted and can’t help myself telling people how cheap it was.
And with some countries now insisting that any advertisements are honest (and actually mention) about retouching and AI content – would you want to give out your AI headshot for PR and own up to it?
If you don’t feel proud of your visuals, you won’t share them. You’ll keep hiding and wondering why your business still feels stuck.
So what’s the answer?
Real photography – ermm you knew I’d say that didn’t you!
The kind that makes you feel confident, seen, and excited to show up. The kind that works hard for your business because it’s rooted in who you actually are.
AI is getting smarter. But it still can’t replace human connection.
And if that’s what your brand is built on, then real images of you being you will always win.
